A material assemblage formed in specific cultural circumstances for a particular need; practical or symbolic. The concept was taken from common French usage (pottering around, doing ‘odd jobs’) and given the more specific meaning via anthropological discourse (see Claude Lévi-Strauss The Savage Mind London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1966, pp 16-36).
